Well there you go! I am back in Queenstown taking a break from my thesis and we did have a big dump a couple of weeks ago, still hanging out for that second one though. To be honest I would rather be in Bali, it sound very much more to my liking.

All the best for the rest of your travels and hopefully we'll run into each other in some far flung corner of the world, or perhaps in the good ol' USA!

Hey Joey! Cool to hear from you again. As a matter of fact, the second time I came to Queenstown (on a hiatus from Te Araroa to hike the Routeburn Trail), I met a whole bunch of jugglers and fire performers. Had a great time hanging out with them in the park. Then later, in Picton, I stayed at the Juggler's Rest hostel and met some cool jugglers there.

Things are going well, I'm now in Bali doing some snorkeling and diving. I heard you got a big dump of snow in NZ!

Hey Jacob. Good to hear you finished the South Island, it's definitely the better of the two to have completed. Did you end up meeting any kindred fire performers? I hope all is well wherever you are now, greetings from wintry Dunedin.

Hi Mark! I'm actually already done with the South Island, and I've decided not to do the North Island. I'm still entering some of the journal entries I wrote on paper, so there'll be a few more posts. In the end it was approximately 75 days of hiking, including zero days spent in trail towns but excluding a few long intermissions to visit my girlfriend or other friends. Eric Martinot did the South Island in 90, and Pepper & Trauma (two other American alumni of the AT and other long trails) evidently did it in about 32 days.

Good luck with your plans to hike Te Araroa! Please feel free to email me with any questions you might have.

Good on ya, Jacob. My name's Mark. I'm a fellow American, origianally from California. I've been living in Melbourne since March 08. Stoked to find your trail record. I through hiked the AT in 2003 and am itching to hike Te Aroroa. Look forward to keeping up with your trek. How long do you expect you might take for this trek?

Best of luck,

Mark Mallman (Rider)

Thanks for the correction regarding Mt Oakden, I've fixed that. I even wondered as I was writing this post whether I was getting it right, but I no longer had that map with me.

You are doing very well, and I am keeping up on the map for you. Mt Oakden beside the Wilberforce River is not Cottons Sheep Range, that is the other side of Lake Coleridge.
I climbed Mt Ogden in winter snow in 1964 and the next day crossed the river in snow too many times for comfort.

My parents' old dishwasher may or may not have been a Kenmore, but it was pretty close to goldenrod yellow. The rotary phone, oven, and countertops in the kitchen haven't been replaced so you still get plenty of yellow vibe.

Sorry I haven't responded to your e-mail; it's starred in my inbox. Your tramp is inspiring. I really must make the trans-Tasman journey to do a (short) one of my own. But maybe I'll let winter come and go first...
